CERATIZIT develops a new milling grade

In the year 2005 CERATIZIT developed a new milling grade which is particularly well-suited for roughing and medium machining of turbine blades. This grade consists of the HyperCoat grade CTC5235, the –M31 milling geometry and various MaxiMill 251 button insert milling cutters. They are designated –R in their description.

“Thanks to the complex Co-based binder the high-performance grade CTC5235 is characterised by both high heat resistance and toughness“, says Peter Uttenthaler, business segment manager for Energy & Transport/Cutting Tools. “In addition the innovative CVD multi-layer coating from the patented HyperCoat range provides the ultimate in wear resistance." This combination of cutting material and coating allows extremely high cutting data. When machining turbine blade steels, these materials notably increase productivity.

Milling geometry  -M31
The highly positive geometry –M31 provides optimum chip evacuation. Furthermore the 4 positive indexing system is synonymous with stable and secure cutting action. “In this manner considerably less process heat and vibration is produced in the tool and workpiece respectively", says Uttenthaler. The result: clearly increased tool life which leads to cost reduction in the production departments.

MaxiMill 251
The MaxiMill 251-R milling system is a more stable version than the already existing 251 system. Type 251-R makes higher milling speed possible. The chips resulting from milling operations are evacuated upwards via the chip flutes through the centrifugal forces.
The MaxiMill 251-R milling cutter range is characterised by good stability and optimum chip evacuation. This is possible thanks to an improved insert pocket design which significantly simplifies the handling in the production procedure. The tool body design has been specially designed for turbine blade machining with its streamline-shaped chip flutes.

Test results have been confirmed
“Our excellent internal test results have been confirmed by benchmark tests for a large turbine producer at a renowned German University,” emphasizes Peter Uttenthaler.
CERATIZIT has succeeded in creating a unique high-end tooling system with an innovative high-performance cutting system for the machining of turbine blades. The system not only helps the blade producers to increase their productivity but also to reduce tooling costs. “The economic machining of complex materials requires an optimisation of all machining components in order to obtain the best possible results. CERATIZIT has succeeded here admirably with the new MaxiMill 251-R milling system and the cutting material CTC5235”, says Peter Uttenthaler.
