Centre of excellence
for super hard cutting materials has been inaugurated |
 |
Super hard materials need to satisfy extremely high requirements. In addition to the material properties, the design of the cutting edge and the quality and precision of the ground surfaces are decisive for performance. CERATIZIT is now investigating the influences of these parameters in more detail. For this purpose at the beginning of 2006 the centre of excellence for super hard cutting materials was inaugurated in Livange (close to Luxembourg City) at the CERATOOL company. This complies with CERATIZIT’s own claim that the company challenges up-to-date technologies and offers intelligent alternatives to the shop floor.
At the centre of excellence the cutting material specialists from CERATIZIT develop new technologies for the production of chip grooves on hard cutting materials such as CBN and PCD products. These cutting materials are produced at the same site. At CERATOOL in Livange experts from various sectors work together to achieve the same goal: the manufacture of high-performance products, which fulfil extraordinary demands with regard to product quality, cutting material performance and precision – for both hard machining and segment specific applications such as aluminium wheel machining.
Everything under one roof “Our competence team works towards a clearly defined goal“, says Dr. Uwe Schleinkofer, head of the development department in the cutting tool section. “This is to provide performance levels which have not been reached so far in selected segments such as energy and transport, automotive and mechanical engineering for cutting tools." In order to make this possible CERATIZIT has invested in an extensive machine park for the following sectors: brazing, grinding, cutting edge preparation and chip grooves with laser technology. No matter whether it is expert knowledge or up-to-the-minute technology – at the new centre of excellence everything is under one roof.
Additional field of competence In particular PCD products with laser chip groove represent a milestone in the cutting tool technology of aluminium alloys. Optimum wear resistance provides very good surface properties of the component. Another advantage is that the integrated chip grooves ensure good chip evacuation. The CERATIZIT PCD products are therefore mainly suitable for the machining of aluminium alloys. Extensive tests carried out for clients have already proved this. In this way CERATIZIT has added another field of competence in the cutting tool sector to their long established sectors like powder-metallurgical HSS, carbide, cermet, ceramic and coating technology.
