There were a lot of entries for the eight categories of the MM Award which was presented on the occasion of AMB in Stuttgart. The carbide specialist CERATIZIT received the prize in the category ‘Periphery’. Innovations were required which were evaluated according to strict criteria: fast production or machining, improved precision, more economic procedures and the elimination of additional production steps.
The MM Award from the techincal magazine MM Maschinenmarkt is provided for the most innovative exhibits in the field of metal working.
The MAC coolant set which was entered by CERATIZIT offers a new method of direct air cooling from the inside of the tool. It makes complete dry machining of aluminium wheels possible without refitting the machines. "There were already various external air cooling systems available in the market; however, their effect was satisfactory to a limited degree. The nozzle was too far away from the tool, too much cold air was lost,” explains Michael Steiner in charge of the development of the new MAC tool at the CERATIZIT development department.
With MAC the CERATIZIT research department has solved this problem. The cooling unit is directly integrated into the CERATIZIT tool. The compressed air from the machine goes through the tool into the MAC unit and is then cooled to minus temperatures through a physical effect known as Joule-Thomson effect. Then it immediately hits the insert and the work piece. This causes the air to be divided into a warm and a cold stream (depending on the setting). The cold air exits on the front of the insert through the lateral hole on the tool. The air temperature on the cutting edge is then in sub-zero range and efficiently cools both work piece and tool
“The award means a lot to us,“ says Sebastian Kassner, automotive product manager at CERATIZIT. “It confirms that we are going the right way with our business partners in selected niches: consistent innovation. Many companies are ever ready to use the word 'innovation', but when even specialists consider one of our developments as such, then so be it!” Gerhard Bailom, automotive segment manager adds: “With regard to MAC not only its innovative content from the technical point of view is decisive, but the customers are also extremely impressed by the cash factor: Together with the fact that the swarf does not have to be cleaned for the following machining operation, doing without coolant means a reduction of production costs by one euro per wheel.”
